This Article will be helpful to you about to Know Your PAN Card with recent update in PAN Card Form with the option to select Father's Name or Mother's Name to be printed on PAN Card.

As we all know that Permanent Account Number is the unique number allotted to an individual, firm, company or any entity identified as a person as per section 2 (31) and the use of Permanent Account Number (PAN) is to store the details of person for various transactions and details related to the income tax. Income tax details like returns filled, tax payable, refund outstanding etc are stored under the PAN of a person. To avail PAN the person has to apply for the same to the PAN authority i.e. Central Board of Direct Tax (CBDT).

A person who want to apply for the new PAN have to fill the specified application for allotment of PAN. There is a procedure of application of PAN. Different applications are required to be made for fresh PAN, lost PAN or any changes / correction in PAN. Different forms for the application of PAN or different kinds of person are:

Form 49A: for the person who is an Indian Citizen / Indian Company / Entities Incorporated in India / Unincorporated Entities formed in India.

Form 49AA: For the person who is not an Indian Citizen / Entities incorporated outside India / Unincorporated Entities outside India.

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) of India has made amendment in the application form for PAN through the exercise of the powers conferred by section 295 of the Income-tax Act, 1961 (43 of 1961), with the help of INCOME-TAX (FIFTH AMENDMENT) RULES, 2014 - SUBSTITUTION OF FORMS 49A AND 49AA. The amendment is made via notification number 26 / 2014 [F.NO.142/15/2013-TPL]/SO 2045(E), DATED 16th May, 2014. The notification states the revised forms for application of PAN allotment.

The difference between the ole and the new PAN allotment application form is that, the new application form issued via notification has a column for showing the mother's name of the applicant on the PAN Card. It does not mean that option is available between showing Mother’s name or father’s name. But it states that the showing of Father’s name id mandatory while showing of Mother’s name is optional. You will have to fill the details of full name consisting of Last Name / Surname, First Name and Middle Name of both your parents. After entering the details you will have to check only one box given below this details means if you want to display your mother's name on your PAN card you will have to check the box given against Mother’s name and if you want to want to display your Father’s name on your PAN card then check the box given against Father’s Name.

The above specimen of revised form for PAN application will make clear the details to be filled. Please do note that this change will affect only the individuals who are going to apply for the allotment of new PAN because company / entity will not have parents and so the question of entering the parents’ details will not arise at all.
